Introduction to Serbia
Serbia is located in both Central and Southeastern Europe. Its territory covers southern part of the Pannonian Plain and central part of the Balkans. Serbia is bordered by Hungary to the north; Romania and Bulgaria to the east; the Republic of Macedonia and Albania to the south; and Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro to the west. The country’s capital, Belgrade, was titled “City of the Future of South Europe” in 2006.
Serbia has 2,000 km of navigable waterways on the Danube, Sava, Tisza and their respective canals, through which it forms part of a European canal network, connecting the North Sea with the Black Sea. Tisza river offers a connection with Eastern Europe while the Sava river connects her to western former Yugoslav republics near the Adriatic Sea.
There are 3 international airports in Serbia: Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport, Niš Constantine the Great Airport and the Vršac international airport.
The Serbian climate is temperate continental climate, with a gradual transition between the four seasons of the year; with cold winters and snowfall, and hot, humid summers with well distributed rainfall patterns. The average annual air temperature is around 12оC, from 37 to 42оC in July, to -15 to 1оC in January. During the summer the sun rises at 4:53 am and sets at 8:28 pm, and during the winter at 7:16 am and 4:08 pm.
Srbia has around 80 rivers (Danube, Tisa, Sava, Great Morava, Drina, Tamiš…) and around 60 lakes (Đerdap, Perućac, Vlasina, Zvornik, Zlatar…)
Most of Central Serbia are covered with low and medium-high mountains. Serbia has 5 national parks.
Serbia Time is in the Central European Time Zone, GMT+1.
