Ivo’s Promo Video
Posted by admin in 2. Ivo's Promo Video on April 18th, 2009
In the spring of 2008. I took part in Belgrade Design Week at the “Ghost Project” exhibition, where I presented a model prototype of my “bench”. Apart from exhibiting my design I had to make a small presentation about my self, and so with a help of Jovan Todorovic I recorded this small video.
Please do take a look at this 7 minute clip ( be aware of it’s 24mb size) as it really describes in a nut shell what I do. Below are the images from that video.
Click here to watch the video.
On the right hand side is my “Bend” lamp which I designed in 2000. and for which I received 1st prize at Young & Design international design competition, held in Milan, Italy.
In 2001. together with some coleagues of mine, I formed “FormART” an association of Serbian designer. That same year we organised a huge promo exhibition at one big gallery in downtown Belgrade. We had more than one thousand people at the oppening night…

In 2003. I prepared for my visit to Magis in Italy. These are the works which I’ve done for just being inspired of my trip…watch the video to hear what happend…

Ivo Martinovic
Posted by admin in 1. Ivo's CV on April 18th, 2009
My name is Ivo Martinovic and I was born in 1976.
By profession I am an industrial designer. I’ve graduated at Academy of Applied Arts & Design in Belgrade in 2000. At the last year of my studies, I’ve won the 1st prize for my lamp design at international competition for lighting – “Young & Design 2000”, held in Milan, Italy. After the graduation I’ve tried to continue my studies by doing post-graduate course, but I didn’t manage. Even though I was accepted at Domus & Polytechnic Academies in Milan, on the basis of my work, unfortunately at that moment I didn’t have enough funds to support my studies and life expences in Italy.
For the next four years I was doing freelance work between Belgrade – Cape Town – Johannesburg.
In 2004 I founded a small web design studio in Belgrade named “New Page Internet Consulting”, specializing in Flash animated presentational web sites. In 2005, I accepted the invitation to become an assistant professor on the course of computer graphics at private university in Belgrade, called “Singidunum”. In 2006 together with a good friend of mine from South Africa, Julio Wood, I started a commercials production house – “1984 Productions”, in Belgrade, Serbia. In less than two years, 1984 Productions became one of the leading TVC production houses in Serbia, and the only internationally awarded production house in Serbia. In the mean time, New Page, managed as well to receive numerous national and international awards for its designs.
Both companies run successfully to this day.

My friend and partner Ivo decided to eventually clean the fish bowl in his office one day. The beast was placed in a glass of water while its bowl was being cleansed of several months worth of gunk and fish excrement. Watching the creature struggle in the glass made quite an impact on me from a visual perspective and I was instantly reminded of the riddle “am I man dreaming that I am a butterfly dreaming that I am man? Or am I a butterfly dreaming etc etc etc etc.” And so I struck on the idea of a fish that becomes so obsessed by the fact that its bowl represents the same proportions of a glass that it eventually traps itself, psychologically speaking in a tiny little space and doesn’t realise that it has an entire ocean to its disposal etc etc etc etc etc blah blah blah… basically, it’s a couple of shots of a fish in a bowl and a glass.
Radiohead Street Spirit

This is a piece of footage that my girlfriend and I shot while on holiday. She wanted to learn to edit so I made the attempt to teach her using this footage. She picked it up almost immediately and is probably the single most talented person I’ve encountered when it comes to understanding and applying the craft, but unfortunately she lacks the patience to see a project through – you see she gets bored very quickly, which is not a very good trait to have as far as editing is concerned. I took her unfinished project and cut it to some Radiohead and then basically treated the piece as a study of shape, form and motion. Again, nothing remarkable, but it did offer yet another opportunity to take a single shot and to experiment a little with some small details. This type of thing keeps the brain clicking and as far as I’m concerned is absolutely essential if one has any hope of keeping one’s thinking fresh and techniques contemporary.

I basically taught myself how to edit. And how I did it was by taking what ever footage I could get my hands on and then spending hours behind a computer figuring things out as I went along while trying to create stories or at least a logical sequence of events from something arbitrary. I soon figured out that one of the best tricks to teaching yourself how to edit is to take one shot and to manipulate it in such a way that it provides an endless opportunity of shots. Which is precisely what I did here – all the footage from this edit comes from one shot. I zoomed images and adjusted speeds and eventually engineered a variety of shots from a single one. Although not well received by most people and although there is nothing particularly outstanding about it, I still hold this piece very dear to me because it represents a point in space and time when I was beginning to discover the beauty and power of editing. I think that not a single discipline has had as much impact on me as a director as editing has – I consider it to be one of the purist and most exciting disciplines in film making and certainly one of the disciplines that allows opportunity for true craftsmanship.
Light Eater

There used to be this short film festival called the Quickies in South Africa where you had to tell a story in one shot and where the duration of the piece had to be no longer than a minute. I scripted something about why moths hunt light. I never got around to shooting a “Quicky” but always remained very fond of the moth idea. When I moved to Serbia it was one of the first test videos I shot. It too was intended to be a company promo but we never got around to using it either, simply because we could not rationalize its relevance. If you have problems reading the text because of resolution it reads like this:
Why do moths hunt light? Why is it that they have this uncanny ability to happily fry themselves to the surface of some incandescent light? Is it that moths are haters of light? Or is it perhaps that they are eaters of light? Little light consumers. Maybe moths have some romantic notion about having to end their pitifully short lives in some dramatic and theatrical fashion. Perhaps the little buggers are just suicidal by nature. The truth about moths is this…. Moths are just curious little creatures.
